The Honest Bread Pledge

TL;DR

The Honest Bread Pledge is four short lines. A baker who claims their listing signs it to confirm they bake from scratch on their own premises, use no artificial additives, tell customers what is in a loaf, and never call frozen bread freshly baked. Signing is free and unlocks the verified stamp.

The pledge is deliberately short. Four lines, plain enough to read to a customer across the counter.

The pledge

  1. I bake my bread from scratch, on my own premises.
  2. I use no artificial additives or processing aids.
  3. I will tell any customer exactly what is in a loaf.
  4. I will not call something “freshly baked” if it arrived frozen.

What each line means

From scratch, on my own premises. You start with raw ingredients and finish with a loaf, in your own bakery. Not frozen dough finished on site. Not par-baked elsewhere.

No artificial additives or processing aids. Flour, water, salt, leaven, time. No emulsifiers, enzymes or improvers, including the ones that hide on the label as processing aids.

I will tell any customer what is in a loaf. Honesty across the counter. If someone asks what is in the bread, they get a straight answer.

I will not call something “freshly baked” if it arrived frozen. The language stays honest too. Warm is not the same as made here, and you will not pretend it is.

How signing works

  1. Find your bakery on Honest Bread, or add it if it is not listed yet.
  2. Click claim this listing and verify you are the bakery, using an email at your own domain or another check we can confirm.
  3. Read the four lines and sign. Your listing becomes baker-signed and shows the Honest stamp.
  4. From there you can keep your details, opening hours and bread range up to date, and add photos.

Signing is free and takes a couple of minutes. Claim your bakery to start.

Questions, answered

What does signing the pledge cost?
Nothing. Signing the pledge is free. It is part of claiming your listing, which is also free. Paid Featured and Boost placement is separate and only affects visibility, never whether you are verified.
What does signing unlock?
A signed pledge changes your listing status to baker-signed and shows the Honest stamp on your profile and cards. It tells customers, in your own words, that you bake the real thing.
Is the pledge legally binding?
It is a public, good-faith commitment rather than a contract. It carries weight because it is made in your name, in public, to your own customers. If a listing is shown to be inaccurate, we correct or remove it.
Can I sign if I buy in some lines?
The pledge is about your bread being baked from scratch on your premises without additives. If part of your bread range is bought in frozen or par-baked, you should not sign for those, and you should be open with customers about which is which.
